I have a 2002 Chevy 2500HD with the Duramax and Allison transmission. A couple of days ago I noticed that transmission fluid was leaking (puddle under truck) but I couldn't tell where it was coming from. I cleaned the fluid from the transmission housing, frame cross-member, and underside of the floorboard with brake cleaner. I have driven the truck for two days now, and no signs of a leak have returned.

Has anyone ran into this problem? The transmission was serviced with new filters and fluid about 6 months ago and I have not had any such problems ever before.

Someone at www.agriculture.com posted a similar problem with their '02 GMC/Allison. (That site recently started registering members, so I don't know if you can read posts without being a member. If you go to that site and click on "Talk," then click on "Machinery Talk", you may be able to read that post. Sorry, I don't know how to do a link, maybe someone else can help here.)

The poster said he found most of the bolts behind the converter were loose and a mechanic told of 2 other Allisons in the area that were also leaking. He was hoping he would not have to pull the transmission every 50,000 miles to tighten these bolts (46,000 miles currently on his truck). Good luck.

Agriculture.com's Machinery Talk page

Here's the question about the leaking mentioned.

Allison leaking

When did they start registering? I haven't been there much at all since last spring. I noticed they updated the site but I still don't care about the format after using this one. Do you go to AgTalk much?

Thanks for posting the link.

It might have been the middle of August when they started registering members but it doesn't seem like its been that long. Its usually the first site I check in the morning and this one is the second. I like their new format that brings a thread back to the top with a new post just like this site. I don't spend as much time there as I used to, the new format makes it a lot faster for me.

Thanks again.

MY friend is a salesman at a large GM dealer. He says they fix quiet a few Allisons with seal leaks.

In case you're interested, posting a link here is much easier than MT is/was. Just click on URL in the box below while you're posting and paste the link in there and then type "link" or "story" or "whatever" and that's it.

Have the anonymous "blow hards" regged on MT and is it still "hate hate hate" or have they cleaned that up? I got so tired of reading 10 reply with only one informational. I haven't been there enough to get a feel.

Registering members really cleaned that site up. You don't have to wade through a bunch of crap posts to find some usefull information.

Good, I guess I'll have to go back and check it out daily again.

Thanks for the info on Allison leaks. What is confusing with my leak is that it has not leaked again. It first showed up leaking on Saturday - a substantial leak where the underside of the floorboard, the front side of the axle housing, and the edges of the left rear fender flare were all splattered with transmission fluid. I cleaned the fluid from under the truck with brake cleaner Saturday evening and there has been no sign of a leak since. I have driven the truck an average of 70 miles per day since then. Still no leak. If my seals were leaking or if the some other part was not bolted in place securely, it seems to me that it would still be leaking. I guess I'll just keep an eye on it.
